Week 5 Predictions

Oklahoma v. Texas – 3:30 ABC: Where does one start with this? The teams, fan bases and states hate each other (sounds like a rivalry I know). Texas has had the upper hand but looked like complete hell getting gashed by UCLA on the ground last week even when they knew UCLA was going to run the ball. OU has looked great against FSU, average against the rest. I’ll take Stoops working out some issues on D and with the complete lack of any playmaker on the Texas offense, Oklahoma wins it.
Score: Oklahoma 38, Texas 17

Wisconsin @ Michigan St. – 3:30 ABC: Wisconsin doesn’t have the greatest success in the state of Michigan and like to play down to the level of their opponents. MD is back two weeks after suffering a heart attack so the emotions will be running high. I’ll take the ground game of Wisconsin over Greg Jones and the Spartan D.
Score: Wisconsin 24, MSU 20

Tennessee @ LSU – 3:30 CBS: This game looks like a disaster. Tennessee shouldn’t go to OT at home vs. UAB. Ever. Jefferson should never take another snap. Ever. I’ll take the home team in this one as LSU pieces together enough offense behind a strong defensive effort. PP scores another TD off an INT. He might be the most exciting defensive back since Charles Woodson.
Score: LSU 30, Tennessee 10

Michigan @ Indiana – 3:30 ESPNU: Deanrd, Denard, Denard, injury. This game could be trouble for Michigan as Indiana isn’t awful and I have no confidence in the Michigan D. I think the OO will carry them to a close road victory.
Score: Michigan 34, Indiana 28

Florida @ Alabama – 8:00 CBS: One of the two huge games this weekend (sorry MSU). Two great coaches, programs, stadiums and annoying fan bases in the country. Florida finally looked good on offense against Kentucky and Alabama did what it need to do against Arkansas. I think Mallet was more of a threat throwing the pill around than UF will be. I’ll take Alabama and the home field. Sucks this game is on at the same time as Stanford/Oregon.
Score: Alabama 20, Florida 17.

Boise St. @ NMSU – 8:00 ESPN3: The beauty contest goes into maximum overdrive.
Score: Boise State 63, NMSU 10.

Stanford @ Oregon – 8:00 ABC/ESPN2: The other big game. I watched Oregon try to give a game to ASU last weekend but ASU being full of failure as usual did not want. Oregon is going to score points. Luck hasn’t been that good the past couple of weeks. I just can’t wrap my head around Stanford beating Oregon in Eugene. I’ve tried talking myself into it but I can’t go for that/No can do. Prove me wrong this week Stanford and I’ll buy whatever you are selling.
Score: Oregon 45, Stanford 28

Washington @ USC – 8:00 ESPN2: I’m still tired about hearing how great Jake Locker is. I don’t think he’ll do shit in the NFL either. I hate USC but Hype Locker is right behind Ohio State on my hate list this week. Locker 3 picks, 50% completion.
Score: USC 45, Washington 17.

Penn St. @ Iowa – 8:00 ESPN: Remember the last time these two played in Iowa? This game won’t be that good.
Score: Iowa 27, PSU 14.

Week 2 – Predictions

Here come some wonderful predictions for week 2 of the college football season. I’m on vacation Saturday and will miss a full two weeks of college football. I will have my rankings up after week #3.

Those rankings will be fluid as I rank them how I see them at that moment in time, not as who will play in the NCG.

8 picks ATS:

Thursday: Auburn @ Missy St +2.
Pick: Auburn -2
I’ve heard enough about Cam Newton. I know he is good and I know Auburn is one of the trendy SECW picks. Hell, “Herby” picked them to win the West. Mullen is a great coach and he’ll have his guys ready to play. That said Auburn has too much for the southern MSU and wins 37 – 20.

Saturday: UGA @ USCe -3.5
Pick: UGA +3.5
USCe beats Southern Miss who gets too much credit for being a totally average program and I’m supposed to consider the Gamecocks as anything more than the 3rd best team in a 1 team division? Maybe so. UGA still has “material” and who know what will become of A.J. Green. Either way I am taking the points USCe 24 UGA 23.

Saturday: FSU @ Oklahoma -7.5
Pick: Oklahoma -7.5
The fossil is gone, Samford rolls in takes a beating and FSU is suddenly back. On the other side Utah St. gave OU all they wanted. This is a classic trap game where people read way too much into both teams. OU doesn’t make a habit of losing in Norman and they aren’t going to start now. OU rolls along 34 – 17.

Saturday: ISU @ Iowa -13.5
Pick: ISU +13.5
This might be the least attractive group of fans ever to attend one game this year. I spent time in Iowa City and was searching for a plastic bag to secure over my head within hours of arriving. ISU looks like they wear rejected USFL uniforms and combine that with that pink locker room and Satan will feel sorry for ISU. He gets behind them and they keep it close enough. Iowa 27 – ISU 23.

Saturday: Michigan @ Notre Dame -4
Pick: Notre Dame -4
I still don’t like Rich Rod and I think Brian Kelly is one of the best coaches in the country, as I have been saying for 7 years. The guy wins. Denard only has so many hits in him, Tate is pissed, the secondary is going to get exposed and it is at ND. The little fellow will be doing some pushups as the Domers win 27 – 17.

Saturday: Miami (FL) @ Ohio State -8.5
Pick: Miami +8.5
I have no idea how good either team is. Will Pryor be the man from the Rose Bowl or the underachiever from the regular season? Will the OSU D-Line get pressure and force some Miami mistakes? Will a missile hit the ‘Shoe and take out two of the three most annoying fan bases in the country? Ohio State might roll but I’ll stick with picking against them in big games and say… Ohio State University 20 – tUM 17.

Saturday: PSU @ Al-a-bama -12
Pick: Bama -12
I would seriously murder 89BB in cold blood to have Keith Jackson announce this game. Also, this game makes me hate Miami (FL) even more. They are responsible for allowing both of these schools and annoying fan bases #2 and #4 to claim another NT. That being said, freshman QB facing Bama at home, freshman QB facing Bama at home, freshman QB… Alabama 31 – PSU 13.

Saturday: Oregon @ Tennessee +12
Pick: Oregon -12
This is either a 2 point game or murder by Oregon. I think. Then again is was New Mexico last week and Tennessee must have some talent. Bah. New coach, lack of talent and 106,000 Vol fans ready to kill someone after this one is over. Oregon 41 – Vols 17.

The Vanderbilt Solution

With the quick retirement of Bobby Johnson the most sports apathetic university in a Big 6 conference is going to be looking for a new football coach. The biggest issue Vandy faces is the conference they play in. Academics are NOT a factor for the rest of the SEC football teams but it is at places like Vandy, Northwestern, Stanford and Duke.

Northwestern has found ways to win the conference and play in the Rose bowl and Stanford has been competitive from time to time. How do you generate excitement in the football program that cares more about GPA than 40 yard times? You have to hire a coach who is anything but conventional. Vandy can not and will not ever line up a conventional set and win in the SEC. They don't have the athletes and they never will. This is why Mike Leach should be the next head football coach at Vanderbilt.

Look at it from both sides. Leach is not going to get a coaching job better than what he had a TTU. No AD department will touch him but there is the beauty of Vandy. They have no athletic department. If they succeed (in Vandy terms) in football it is a bonus. There are no expectations and if they get pissed with Leach, which they will at some point, they'll cut ties and he'll be able to look at a HC job in DII. That is to the benefit of Vanderbilt because…

Leach is no dummy. He knows that with even marginal success at Vanderbilt, he might get another shot at something bigger. At this point in time I believe that to be 100% true. He can recruit smart kids to run his system and hope that can combine a weak non-conference with three SEC wins and they are bowl bound yearly. Leach can take all the credit and Vandy can get their small and wealthy alumni base fired up.

As much of a pain in the ass as Leach surely is, hiring him would at least give Vandy a fighting chance. Run that spread, take their beatings while being entertained on the football by the mad man of college football and take a shot at going to their fifth bowl game, ever.

2010 BCS Title Game Prediction

I swear I am going to make an good effort this year.

For the first post let us set the curse on the path to Columbus, OH by picking the Buckeyes over the Boise St. Broncos.

Don't count out OU, Bama or TCU.
